Urban Beekeeping

As part of its role as a leader in sustainable development, in 2012, the Palais des congrès lauched an ambitious project to raise bees on its rooftop garden with the help of Alvéole. The hives at the Palais are populated by more than 150,000 Italian Bees that play a vital role in the pollination of the Culti-Vert rooftop garden. They produce more than 100 kg of high-quality white clover honey and ensure the beauty of the Palais gardens. At the height of the season, each hive can contain up to 70,000 bees that work in perfect harmony to ensure the survival of the colony. During the winter, the bees rest but don’t sleep. They maintain the hive temperature at about 37 degress Celcius, despite the cold Québec winter!
