Technical Tours give Apimondia participants the opportunity of visiting Canadian Bee farms and discover the local beekeeping tradition.
Tours are reserved to Apimondia participants only, a limited number of Accompanying Persons can attend if availability lasts.

INTERMIEL (13th September - Tours in AM or PM)

Founded in 1976 by Viviane and Christian Macle, Intermiel is an important apiarian farm that manages the production of 8000 beehives. The company also operates a maple forest with 18 000 maple taps and an orchard of 600 apple trees.

The first recipient of the gold medal of "l’Ordre national du mérite agricole du Québec" in beekeeping, winner of the agritourism mention and selected as the best beekeeping company in the world according to "World's Greatest" in the United States, a farm tour at Intermiel is a must during your stay at Apimondia 2019.

Recognized in Quebec and throughout North America for the quality and great diversification of its products, as well as for its unique educational program, Intermiel receives more than 100 000 visitors each year, including 15 000 students from Quebec and Ontario schools.

Located 275 km north of Montreal, at the foot of the Montagne du Diable, our farm is nestled in a land full of sinuous valleys of wooded hills, prairies, lakes, and rivers. A wild and forest region, free of intensive agriculture, making it an environment of high quality for our 1,000-beehive apiary. But who are we? Fools raving about honey, artisans of the soil, epicureans, inquisitive people who consider the beekeeper’s craft as the perfect mix of entomology, biology, and botany. But again, a couple that loves their work, bees and good life in good company.

We invite you to visit our family farm, our apiaries, our queen breeding center, our gourmet and cosmetic processing rooms, our meadery and our Pollens & Nectars restaurant.

MONTREAL HONEY (13th and 14th September - Tours in AM or PM)

For ten years, the popularity of urban beekeeping has exploded and the interest in beekeeping in general is growing dramatically. And Montreal does not escape! The city has two major actors in urban beekeeping, Montreal Honey being among these, and more than 2000 hives on the island. With this incredible growth, hive management issues, bee resources and the utility of urban beekeeping have become very relevant.
During this visit, participants will have the opportunity to explore the worlds of beekeeping and urban pollination, as well as a privileged visit, with professional guide and bus, throughout a borough of the city of Montreal.

Visit of "standard" hives with an exploitation of hives for the production

Monday, Sept. 2 – International Arrivals – Toronto, Ontario, Canada

  • Arrivals into Pearson International Airport – Transfers to downtown hotel - included.
  • Those arriving early have options such as visiting Toronto’s CN Tower, Hockey Hall of Fame, Ripley’s Aquarium and other Toronto activities including shopping at the Toronto Eaton’s Centre (steps from your hotel) and along the Yonge Street shopping district.
  • Dinner on your own at hotel or restaurants near the hotel in downtown Toronto.
  • Overnight at the Chelsea Hotel, Bond Place or Strathcona Hotel in Toronto (TBA).

Tuesday, Sept. 3 – Toronto – Niagara Falls                                           

  • Breakfast in the hotel. Check-out.
  • First stop will be at the Fairmont Royal York - tour of rooftop apiary. This is an example of urban beekeeping on a small specialized scale.
  • The Royal York beekeeping visit will be followed by a city tour of Toronto then travel to Niagara-on-the-Lake (NOTL).
  • Stop for lunch at Niagara College, NOTL, tour of commercial bee yard, presentation on program, lunch, winery, meadery, brewery tour
  • Travel along the Niagara Parkway from Queenston to Niagara Falls, Ontario including stops at the Whirlpool Rapids, Sir Adam Beck Power Plant observation area and then to the famous Canadian Horseshoe Falls.
  • Arrive at Hornblower Niagara River Cruise Centre for evening river cruise to the base of the Horseshoe Falls.
  • Pick up from Boat Tour, travel to local hotel for overnight.
  • Check into your hotel near the Falls.
  • Dinner on your own in Niagara Falls as there are literally hundreds of restaurants in the area including several near your hotel.
  • Overnight at the Radisson Hotel and Suites Fallsview, Niagara Falls, Ontario (or similar). City view rooms are included. Fallsview rooms can be booked for an additional fee upon request. This hotel is within a short walk of an overlook of the Canadian Horseshoe Falls and within walking distance of the Niagara River and both American and Canadian Horseshoe Falls.
